First the stars of constellation entered the constellation of Scorpio. The stars of this constellation were considered to be constellation not long time ago and were found later than other zodiac constellations. However this constellation is mentioned in works of some astronomers. In the 1st century BC Virgil proposes to create the new constellation taking the part of Scorpions that was dedicated to the Emperor August.
When this constellation was just forming, it first got the name claws and were thought to be the claws of Scorpio. But later astronomers also started to use another name for this constellation that was Libra that is translated from Latin as "scales". By in the 1st century BC this constellation got the final name Libra.
This is the only zodiac sign that represents inanimate object. Investigators suppose that it is connected with the fact that this sign formed later than other constellations of zodiac circle. In opinion of some scientists Libra represented the altar, later it was thought to represent altar and lamp but then as scales in claws of Scorpio or as claws of Scorpio in the scales. Later the claws released scales and became shorter. Till nowadays the stars are called the Southern and the Northern claws.
