Perseus

Perseus is the constellation in the Northern part of the sky named after the Greek hero who killed Gorgon. It is one of 48 constellations of Ptolemaic and was adapted as one of the modern 88 constellations by the International Association of astronomers. It has the famous variable star Algol and it is also the radiant of annual meteor stream of Perseus.

Mythological Perseus is the main hero of one of the most famous myths of Ancient Greece. Perseus is described as weak but still seen with the necked eye. It looks like the man that holds the round object far from himself. Other constellations are situated in such manner that they make the story of one of the most famous myths.

Perseus was the son of the woman and the god Zeus. He had to get the head of Gorgon as the wedding present for Dictus that was the brother of the king (in reality this task was only the trap made by Disctus). He managed to kill Gorgon with the help of Hermes and Athens. He saved Andromeda from the maritime monster on his way back. Perseus was considered to be the great hero and he was put to the sky to honour his deeds.

This constellation also has the asterism. The head of Gorgon is one of them that is the asterism that corresponds to the part of traditional figure of constellation. It makes the quadrangle of not rather correct form.

Another asterism is made of six stars. These stars are situated in the line from the South to the North. And this asterism is called the Segment of Perseus.

When we look into the sky, we see thousands of little shinning points in the sky.? They could be seen only at night. These shinning little points are stars that are bigger than our planet but they are so far that they seem to be only little points.

If you ask someone what constellation is, he/she will probably answer you that it is the group of stars located in certain form after which the constellation got its name. And this person will be completely right in the 19th century.

Today vocabulary defines constellation as the areas that divide the sky to make the orientation in the night sky easier. In ancient times constellations were the characteristic figures made by the bright stars.

In 1922 the General Assembly of the International Association of Astronomers made the final list of 88 constellations into which the sky was divided. And in eight years the exact and final limits between them were made. During five years scientists corrected some limits. But in 1935 limits were adapted finally and couldn't be changed any more.
