Ursa Major

Ursa Major is the constellation of the Northern hemisphere of the sky. Seven stars of the constellation of the Ursa Major make the figure that reminds the ladle with the handle. With the help of its two extreme stars it is possible to find the polar star.

Ursa Major is the third constellation by its territory seven stars of which make the big ladle. This constellation is known to people since ancient times under different names. It was called differently from "plough" to "seven wise men". All stars of the ladle have the Arab names: α-star had the name that was translated as bear, β-star was translated as waist.

The last star of the Ursa Major was named "the leader of crying" among Arabs. Such poetic image was taken from the Arab understanding of the constellations Ursa Major. The system of names of stars that correspond to the Greek alphabet is not fair because the order of letters corresponds to the order of stars forgetting about the brightness.

The name "the leader of crying" can be also explained by the form of constellations where one star is the leader after which other six stars follow. It is interesting to know that five stars of the Ursa Major except the extreme ones really make one group in the space. This is the moving star-clusters that move rapidly in the sky. Other two stars move in another direction that is why the form of the ladle changes radically every 100 thousand years. It also has the star with the help of which people checked the eyesight in ancient times.

When we look into the sky, we see thousands of little shinning points in the sky.? They could be seen only at night. These shinning little points are stars that are bigger than our planet but they are so far that they seem to be only little points.

If you ask someone what constellation is, he/she will probably answer you that it is the group of stars located in certain form after which the constellation got its name. And this person will be completely right in the 19th century.

Today vocabulary defines constellation as the areas that divide the sky to make the orientation in the night sky easier. In ancient times constellations were the characteristic figures made by the bright stars.

In 1922 the General Assembly of the International Association of Astronomers made the final list of 88 constellations into which the sky was divided. And in eight years the exact and final limits between them were made. During five years scientists corrected some limits. But in 1935 limits were adapted finally and couldn't be changed any more.
